Hexcel (NYSE:HXL) sank on Thursday, October 22, 2026, after the aerospace-materials company reported third-quarter sales that fell slightly below expectations. The stock, a member of the S&P MidCap 400, traded around $80.90 before the open, and about $79.37 in the morning.
The reaction looked large relative to the shortfall.
A small miss
Hexcel reported third-quarter sales of $496.4 million, up from a year earlier but below the $502.8 million analysts expected. Adjusted earnings came in at $0.50 per share. Adjusted EBITDA was $84 million, against an estimate of $90 million, a shortfall of about $6 million.
There were positives. Operating margin improved from a year ago. The company reconfirmed its full-year revenue guidance at a midpoint of $2.08 billion, which sits just below consensus, and reiterated adjusted earnings guidance at a midpoint of $2.35 per share. It also raised its share-buyback authorization to $750 million.
Market commentary pointed to temporary softness in fighter and space programs.
Why the stock fell so far
The size of the drop stood out.
Part of the explanation may be expectations. A miss, even a narrow one, combined with guidance that sits slightly below consensus, can prompt a sharp reset in a stock.
Other materials makers also struggled. Carpenter Technology (NYSE:CRS) slumped after its revenue also fell short of forecasts, despite a profit beat.
A difficult market for misses
Investors were unforgiving toward any company that disappointed on Thursday. Graco (NYSE:GGG) tumbled after missing on sales and profit, and Sonoco (NYSE:SON) gapped lower on its own miss, while beats from Ryder System (NYSE:R) and Badger Meter (NYSE:BMI) were rewarded.
The broader market was dominated by a selloff in artificial-intelligence and chip stocks. The Nasdaq Composite fell 694.00 points to 26,008.86, its steepest drop since June 5, and the S&P 500 lost 93.74 points to 7,663.43, its worst day since July. Heavy AI spending plans from Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) and a supply warning from Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) were the main triggers.
Defense stocks did better. Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) rallied after beating forecasts and raising its 2026 profit outlook, and it reported a record backlog of $292 billion. That made the reported softness in fighter programs all the more notable.
Elsewhere, most S&P 500 stocks rose, according to market reports, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 11.89 points. Treasuries rallied, with the 10-year yield closing back below a closely watched threshold for the first time since September 22, while Brent crude settled at $113.17, a five-month high.
Under the surface, the equal-weight version of the S&P 500 rose, and consumer staples had their best day since April 2025 and hit a record. Initial jobless claims came in at 194,000, below the 200,000 expected. Volume was heavy, with 18.79 billion shares changing hands on US exchanges against an average of 17.19 billion over the prior 20 sessions, according to market data.
Hexcel Watches Fighter and Space Programs
The next test is whether the softness in fighter and space programs proves temporary. Investors will look for signs of a fourth-quarter pickup that keeps the company on track for its reconfirmed full-year guidance.
The larger buyback authorization gives the company room to repurchase shares at lower prices if it chooses.
