IDEX (NYSE:IEX) edged higher on Wednesday, October 28, after reporting record quarterly results and lifting its outlook, adding a modest gain on the S&P 500.
The move was measured rather than dramatic, but it fit a pattern this earnings season of investors rewarding companies that combine strong results with a higher forecast.
A Record Quarter
IDEX delivered a record quarter and raised its guidance, according to market reports. A record result shows the company's businesses are performing at their highest level yet, and a raised outlook with only one quarter of the year remaining suggests the company expects the momentum to hold in the months ahead.
IDEX is a diversified industrial company that makes highly engineered products, including pumps, flow meters, valves, fluidics systems and optical components. Its products are used in markets ranging from chemical processing and water treatment to life sciences, semiconductors and fire and rescue equipment.
What IDEX Does
Many of IDEX's products are specialized components that customers rely on for precise performance. That niche focus is often cited by analysts as a source of pricing power, even when broader industrial demand softens.
Industrials were among the eight of 11 S&P 500 sectors that rose on Wednesday. Several companies with raised outlooks found buyers, including Fortive (NYSE:FTV), which climbed after its revenue growth accelerated, and Generac (NYSE:GNRC), which rose on a long-term Amazon data-center generator deal.
A Mixed Industrial Backdrop
Others were punished. Lennox (NYSE:LII) slid after cutting its earnings guidance sharply, and Old Dominion Freight Line (NASDAQ:ODFL) fell as its trucking volumes slipped. About 200 S&P 500 companies have reported so far, and a large majority have beaten estimates, according to LSEG data.
For industrial companies, the combination of a strong economy and elevated borrowing costs creates a mixed backdrop: customers have demand to meet, but financing new projects has become more expensive.
What to Watch
The S&P 500 rose 21.38 points to close at 7,743.98, its third straight gain. Technology and energy led the market, powered by a chip rally and oil back above $100 a barrel.
Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) reports before Thursday's open, offering a major read on industrial and construction demand, along with Mastercard (NYSE:MA) and Merck (NYSE:MRK). The Atlanta Fed's GDPNow model has pointed to a strong quarter, and confirmation of that would support the outlook for industrial spending.
