GE Vernova unveiled a $9 billion deal for Trench Group alongside $29.3 billion in quarterly orders and a raised outlook, yet the power-equipment maker's shares edged lower.
GE Vernova (NYSE:GEV) closed lower on Wednesday, October 28, on the S&P 500 despite a packed day of news that included a major acquisition, strong orders, a raised forecast and a bigger buyback.
A Busy Quarter
The power-equipment company agreed to buy Trench Group for $9.0 billion, reported third-quarter orders of $29.3 billion and raised its guidance. It also doubled its share buyback, according to a market recap of the session.
GE Vernova, spun off from General Electric in 2024, makes gas turbines, wind turbines and grid equipment. Its business is exposed to rising electricity demand, much of it tied to the build-out of AI data centers. The $29.3 billion in orders and a growing backlog underscored how strong that demand remains.
Why the Stock Still Slipped
No specific reason for the modest decline was given in reports of the session. With so much positive news, investors may have already expected a strong report, which can set a high bar. Large acquisitions can also give investors pause as they weigh the price paid, financing and integration risks.
GE Vernova was not the only company to dip despite strong figures. ADP (NASDAQ:ADP), Garmin (NYSE:GRMN) and TE Connectivity (NYSE:TEL) also fell on the S&P 500 after solid reports.
AI Power Theme Stays in Focus
The broader AI-infrastructure trade had a strong day. Vertiv (NYSE:VRT) soared after raising guidance, with chief executive Giordano Albertazzi saying the industry is in the middle of the largest infrastructure build-out and it is accelerating. Oracle (NYSE:ORCL) jumped after its investor day.
Melius Research's James West said AI compute is a natural gas demand story, a view that speaks directly to demand for GE Vernova's gas turbines. The Federal Reserve left its benchmark rate range unchanged in a 10-2 vote, and long-dated Treasury yields climbed, with utilities the weakest sector.
What to Watch
Investors will look for more detail on the Trench acquisition, including its expected closing timeline and financing, as well as how the deal fits GE Vernova's grid strategy.
Big-tech capital spending remains a key driver for the AI-power trade. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) reported after Wednesday's close, and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) reports after the bell Thursday. Also Thursday, the advance estimate of third-quarter GDP and September PCE inflation arrive at 8:30 a.m. ET.
