Four-Month Transition Results Drive the Rally
FedEx Freight (NYSE:FDXF) shares are trading up 14.61% today at $125.72 after the company released results for a one-time four-month transition period from June 1 to September 30, 2026. The period reflects a move to calendar-year reporting following the company's spin-off from FedEx (NYSE:FDX).
Revenue reached $3.3 billion, up 9.2% from a year earlier, supported mainly by fuel surcharges, higher weight per shipment, an extra operating day and stronger base pricing. Softer volumes partly offset those gains, with average daily shipments down 1.4% to 88.9 thousand.
FedEx Freight is North America's largest less-than-truckload carrier, offering Priority, Economy and Direct services. It runs about 30,000 vehicles and more than 365 locations, and employs roughly 40,000 people.
Adjusted Operating Income Rises 16.4% While GAAP Earnings Slip
Adjusted operating income rose 16.4% to $510 million, lifting the adjusted Margin 90 basis points to 15.5%. GAAP operating income was $383 million, down 6.1%, with an 11.7% margin that was 190 basis points lower.
Diluted earnings per share were $1.54, down 43%, and adjusted earnings per share were $2.15, down 24.6%. Adjusted figures exclude $127 million of spin-off costs, and management pointed to higher compensation, transition services costs and standalone technology spending as headwinds.
Revenue per shipment climbed 10.1% to $413.00, though the figure rose just 1.6% excluding fuel. Management also noted a second consecutive quarter of record-low claims ratio, which it linked to better customer experience.
Cash Position, Capital Spending and 52-Week Context
Operating cash flow was $390 million, compared with $1.085 billion a year earlier, a period that benefited from large intercompany changes with the former parent. Capital spending rose to $151 million from $55 million. The company ended the period with $388 million in cash and total Liquidity of $1.6 billion, and it repaid $115 million of Debt principal.
No Dividend or buyback has been declared, though the company plans to announce a dividend and share repurchase plan for calendar 2027, subject to board approval.
Market data shows a market Capitalization of about $18.7 billion, trailing Revenue near $8.8 billion, a price-to-earnings ratio near 28.5 and a 52-week range of $103.48 to $200.00. The average analyst price target was about $145.43.
Raised Guidance Sets the Bar for the Quarter Ending December 31
For the period from June 1 to December 31, 2026, FedEx Freight now expects revenue of $5.58 billion to $5.65 billion and adjusted operating income of $695 million to $715 million, up from a prior range of $605 million to $645 million. GAAP operating income guidance was trimmed to $465 million to $485 million.
For the three months ending December 31, the company guided to revenue of $2.30 billion to $2.37 billion and adjusted operating income of $185 million to $205 million, compared with $162 million a year earlier. Management cited fuel tailwinds and slightly higher Volume assumptions. Investors will watch how volumes and Yield develop and whether the capital return plan for 2027 is detailed.
