MasTec (NYSE:MTZ) moved higher on Friday, October 30, 2026, rising in mid-morning trading as investors rewarded a third-quarter report that topped expectations on both profit and revenue. The gain made it one of the notable advancers in the Russell 1000 on a day when most of the market was falling.

Adjusted Earnings Per Share came to $2.96, well above the $2.02 consensus. Revenue reached $5.2 billion, ahead of analyst forecasts of $4.94 billion. The size of the earnings beat, nearly a dollar a share above estimates, was the headline number for traders.

A record backlog

The company also reported a record backlog of $24.5 billion. For a contractor, backlog is the value of work that customers have committed to but that has not yet been completed, so a record figure points to a long runway of projects ahead.

MasTec, based in Coral Gables, Florida, builds and maintains infrastructure for the energy, utility, communications and power-delivery industries. That mix ties its order book to spending on pipelines, power lines, renewable projects and network upgrades.

The guidance picture

MasTec guided 2026 adjusted earnings per share to $8.92 to $9.30. The consensus estimate of $9.27 sits near the top of that range, so the outlook was broadly in line with what analysts expected rather than a clear raise above Wall Street's forecasts.

That combination of a strong quarter, a record backlog and guidance bracketing consensus was enough to lift the shares in a market that was punishing companies with weaker outlooks. Investors on Friday were showing little patience for disappointing guidance, and MasTec avoided that trap.

A difficult backdrop

The broader market had its worst day since June. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points to 7,580.07, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 572.25 points to 51,770.31 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 747.73 points to 25,437.00. The Russell 2000 slid 47.37 points to 2,811.84.

The selloff was driven by Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s warning about cash burn and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s negative trailing free cash flow, which hit chip, AI and technology stocks hardest. Industrials, MasTec's sector, were also among the weaker groups on the day, which made its gain stand out. Energy, consumer staples, utilities and health care rose as money rotated toward defensive and commodity-linked areas.

Oil stayed above $100 a barrel, with West Texas Intermediate crude settling at $104.12 after reports of tanker incidents near the Strait of Hormuz and the possibility of renewed U.S. strikes on Iran. High energy prices have a direct bearing on spending by the pipeline and energy customers that MasTec serves.

"The earnings bar is very high," an Investment strategist said. MasTec was one of the companies that cleared it.

What to watch

Investors will watch how quickly MasTec converts its record backlog into revenue and whether margins hold as it works through the projects. The company's final-quarter results will show where full-year earnings land inside its guidance range.

The macro calendar is busy. The Federal Reserve held rates this week in a 10-2 vote, but several Fed officials said on Friday that rates may need to rise, and markets are leaning toward a December hike. Higher borrowing costs can affect the timing of large infrastructure projects. The midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, and the October jobs report on Friday, November 6, are the next big events for the market.
