A Record Volume Quarter Meets a Narrow EPS Shortfall
Steel Dynamics (NASDAQ:STLD) shares were trading down 0.76% at $243.30 on Tuesday, against a prior close of $245.17, after a steeper decline in early trading. Third quarter EPS of $5.26 missed consensus estimates of roughly $5.42 to $5.48 and the company's own guidance range of $5.34 to $5.38. Net Income reached $756 million, up from $534 million in the second quarter, on net sales of $6.51 billion.
The Indiana-based company is one of the largest domestic steel producers and metals recyclers, using electric arc furnaces that run on scrap. Steel shipments reached a record 3.8 million tons, Operating Income of about $1.0 billion rose 44% from the prior quarter, and adjusted EBITDA was $1.19 billion, up from $921 million.
Recycling and Aluminum Softness Weigh on the Mix
The average external steel selling price rose $102 per ton to about $1,400 while scrap costs fell $8 per ton to $404, which widened the metal spread by roughly $110 per ton. Steel fabrication operating income rose to $91 million from $85 million, and its backlog is 50% above last year and extends into the second quarter of 2027.
Two other areas were less helpful. Metals recycling operating income fell $15 million to $33 million, and aluminum operating losses narrowed 21% to $26 million with flat-rolled shipments of only 55,000 metric tons. Yield and quality issues at a mill, which management blamed on coolant and has since corrected, also weighed on sentiment.
Valuation, Peers and Management's 2027 Optimism
Steel Dynamics has a market Capitalization of $34.87 billion, a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 10.84 and a trailing ratio of 18.02, with trailing EPS of $11.03 and a Dividend Yield of 0.86%. The shares trade about 16% below the 52-week high of $288.74 and well above the low of $146.11.
Management stayed upbeat on 2027 demand, citing low imports, infrastructure and data-center spending. Cleveland-Cliffs (NYSE:CLF) reported strong results on Monday that lifted the group, and Nucor (NYSE:NUE) is due to report on October 27. Operating Cash Flow was $846 million in the quarter, with Buybacks of $276 million, dividends of $76 million and Liquidity of $2.4 billion.
Pricing Durability and the January CEO Handover Shape What Comes Next
Steel Dynamics combined record shipments, firm pricing and a strong fabrication backlog with a small shortfall against its own guidance. Mark Millett is due to become executive chairman on January 1, 2027, when chief financial officer Theresa Wagler takes over as chief executive. Investors may watch whether steel prices hold, whether the aluminum ramp-up delivers and whether cost control improves.
