ASE Technology Holding (NYSE:ASX) fell 12.70% on Friday, a day after the Taiwanese chip packaging and testing giant reported a strong third quarter. The selling appears to have been driven by the broad semiconductor rout that followed Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s weak outlook rather than anything in ASE's own numbers.
What ASE Does
ASE is the world's largest provider of outsourced semiconductor assembly and test services, packaging and testing chips designed and fabricated by other companies, a step that has grown more important as advanced packaging becomes central to AI processors. Its US-listed shares are American depositary shares, while its primary listing is in Taipei.
A Robust Quarter
The third-quarter report, released on October 29, showed net revenues of NT$244.16 billion, up sharply from a year earlier. Net income attributable to shareholders reached NT$27.0 billion, compared with NT$10.9 billion a year earlier and NT$21.1 billion in the prior quarter. Diluted Earnings per Share were NT$5.84, up from NT$2.41. Gross margin improved to 22.1% from 21.0% in the second quarter and Operating Margin rose to 13.6% from 11.1%. Market reports said the company raised its 2026 capital spending plan to US$11.5 billion.
Results Did Not Protect the Stock
Intel guided fourth-quarter Revenue to $15.0 billion to $16.0 billion, below expectations of about $17.1 billion, and said the PC slowdown should continue at least through the first half of next year. The semiconductor ETF fell nearly 8% intraday, and ASE fell along with chipmakers and optical suppliers. Higher capital spending can cut two ways: it signals confidence in Demand but adds to concerns about how much is being spent across the AI Supply chain. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points, or 1.8%, to 7,580.07 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 747.73 points, or 2.9%, to 25,437.00, as Intel's weak outlook triggered a chip rout and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s results revived worries about AI spending.
Monthly Revenue Reports and Packaging Demand
Investors will watch ASE's monthly revenue reports, demand for advanced packaging tied to AI chips, the pace of its capacity expansion and any sign that PC weakness spreads to its broader customer base.
