Shares of MMTEC (NASDAQ:MTC) sank before the opening bell on Thursday, October 22, 2026, trading at about $4.97 in premarket trading.
The drop came without company news. MMTEC did not issue a press release, financial update or regulatory filing tied to the premarket move.
The premarket price is a snapshot taken before the regular session opened at 9:30am ET. It is not a closing price, and early moves can change once full trading begins.
A small tech stock
MMTEC's market value is roughly $690 million, making it larger than many of the micro caps that appear on premarket movers lists, though still small by Nasdaq standards. It was one of several smaller technology names that moved sharply before the bell.
Smaller technology companies can be volatile, particularly when trading volumes are thin. In premarket sessions, only a fraction of the usual number of shares changes hands, so a relatively small number of sell orders can push the price down sharply.
Without a clear catalyst, the drop could reflect positioning, profit-taking or broader nervousness about technology stocks ahead of the open.
A risk-off mood for tech
The premarket weakness came as technology stocks were bracing for a heavy day. After Wednesday's close, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) reported that it expects 2026 capital expenditure of $135 billion to $145 billion and posted negative free cash flow, its first cash outflow in more than a decade, according to market data. Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX)'s outlook was also slightly light at the midpoint and cited supply constraints.
When regular trading began, the selling intensified. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 26,008.86, down 694.00 points, its steepest drop since June 5. It ended a seven-session winning streak and lost about $1 trillion in market value, according to market data. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index had its biggest one-day drop since June 23.
Financial technology stocks tied to crypto also had a weak day. Bitcoin fell to about $81,200 to $81,300, its biggest drop since June, and Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) and Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) retreated.
Where investors went instead
Not everything fell. About two of every three S&P 500 stocks rose, according to market reports. Consumer staples had their best day since April 2025, health care hit a record, and financials and utilities gained. Exchange operator Nasdaq Inc. (NASDAQ:NDAQ) rallied after its own quarterly results beat forecasts, while CME Group (NASDAQ:CME) rose after an upgrade from JPMorgan.
Treasuries rallied strongly, with the 10-year yield closing back below a closely watched threshold for the first time since September 22.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies edged up 3.01 points to 2,784.03, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished essentially flat, up 11.89 points at 52,867.98. Trading was heavy, with 18.79 billion shares changing hands on US exchanges, according to market data.
MMTEC Looks Past the Premarket Snapshot
Investors will look for any announcement or filing from MMTEC and for how its shares traded once the regular session began; the closing figure was not confirmed. For technology stocks, next week's results from Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) on October 28 and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) on October 29 will be closely watched, along with the Federal Reserve's decision on Wednesday, October 28. Friday's calendar includes S&P Global PMI data.
