A loss that beat, a guide that did not
Roblox gave investors a better-than-expected loss on Thursday. What it could not give them was the holiday-quarter outlook they wanted. Shares plunged in after-hours trading on October 29, falling to around $43.84, according to market data, after the online gaming platform issued fourth-quarter revenue guidance that fell short of forecasts.
After-hours figures shifted through the evening, and reports differed on the exact size of the drop. But they agreed it was among the steepest declines after the bell. Roblox had already edged lower during the regular session.
The quarter
Roblox reported a third-quarter loss of $0.32 per share, narrower than the $0.43 loss analysts expected. Revenue came in at $1.70 billion.
On its own, that might have been enough for a decent reaction. But growth companies are valued on where they are going, and Roblox's forward view disappointed.
The guidance gap
For the fourth quarter, Roblox guided revenue to $1.89 billion to $2.00 billion. The midpoint of that range, $1.945 billion, sits below the $2.017 billion consensus. The holiday quarter is typically a big one for gaming, so a guide below expectations landed hard.
Market data also cited declining user and engagement metrics. For a platform whose Business depends on people spending time and money in user-created games, engagement is a core measure of health, and any softening tends to draw immediate scrutiny.
Part of an after-hours rout
Roblox was not alone in extended trading. Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) and Twilio (NYSE:TWLO) also tumbled after the bell, and Pinterest (NYSE:PINS) slid after missing on revenue and guiding fourth-quarter adjusted EBITDA below expectations. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) dropped after its fourth-quarter sales guide midpoint missed, and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) plunged on weak guidance. Nasdaq-100 futures fell Thursday evening, according to market data.
The common thread was guidance. Several companies beat on the quarter just reported, but investors punished outlooks that did not meet expectations.
A difficult day for growth stocks
The regular session had already been hard on technology. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) suffered its worst day since its 2004 IPO, the Nasdaq Composite lost 365.13 points to 26,184.72, and the S&P 500 slipped 23.59 points to 7,720.39. Software stocks were hit hard after ServiceNow (NYSE:NOW) and Fortinet (NASDAQ:FTNT) reports.
Yet the broader market was surprisingly healthy. More than 400 S&P 500 members rose, eight of 11 sectors advanced, and the Russell 2000 gained 28.71 points to 2,859.22. One strategist said, "There's plenty of other places to go with your money outside of the AI trade that have pretty decent prospects."
The economic data showed resilience. Third-quarter GDP accelerated from the second quarter and beat forecasts, and consumer spending grew solidly, though September PCE Inflation ran hot.
Roblox's regular-session dip had been modest, which made the evening Reversal all the more striking for investors who had held the stock through the report.
What to watch
Friday's regular session will show whether Roblox's after-hours decline holds once full trading Volume returns. Investors will dig into management's commentary on bookings, engagement trends and holiday-season expectations.
The engagement metrics flagged in market data could become the central focus. Signs that users are returning or spending more would help repair confidence, while further declines would add to concerns.
More broadly, Friday's Employment Cost index and the Federal Reserve's December 8–9 meeting, where futures lean toward a hike, will shape the mood for Growth Stocks after a bruising day and evening for the sector.
