Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN) shares are rallying after UBS upgraded the stock to Buy from Neutral, keeping a $17 price target. The bank called the roughly 19% one-month selloff a buying opportunity ahead of the R2 ramp and an expected inflection in automotive gross margins. Volume is well above average, in a broadly firm session led by consumer discretionary stocks as oil falls.

UBS Calls the Pullback an Entry Point Before the R2 Ramp

The call follows a third-quarter beat, with revenue of $2.155 billion, up 38%, and adjusted EPS of negative $0.48, along with a narrowed 2026 guidance range. A Jefferies upgrade came last week.

UBS also pointed to the Autonomy+ launch as a potential rival to Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Full Self-Driving. It said it sees no need for new capital before 2029, given about $13 billion of available and targeted funding.

Vehicle Lineup and Business Segments

Rivian is a U.S. electric-vehicle and automotive-technology company headquartered in Irvine, California, that designs, develops and manufactures vehicles in Normal, Illinois. Its lineup includes the R1T pickup, the R1S SUV and the new midsize R2, plus electric delivery vans built with Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). It sells directly to consumer and commercial customers.

It reports two segments, Automotive and Software and Services, with the latter covering the Volkswagen joint venture, fleet tools, charging, and repair and maintenance.

Losses, Cash Burn and Cost Pressures Remain

Risks remain, including the $913 million third-quarter net loss, heavy cash burn and rising component costs. The stock is still down roughly 37% to 42% year to date, and a CFO transition is pending. Trailing revenue is roughly $5.9 billion.

The market Capitalization is about $19.35 billion, with trailing EPS of negative $2.04 and a 52-week range of $11.38 to $22.69.

R2 Production and Gross Margin Inflection to Track

Investors will watch the pace of the R2 ramp, whether automotive gross margins inflect as UBS expects, progress on Autonomy+ and how the CFO transition unfolds. Component costs and cash burn remain the key metrics tied to the funding outlook.
