Institutional Mandates Drive the Flow Rebound

AllianceBernstein (NYSE:AB) reported on Tuesday net inflows of USD 6.6 billion for the third quarter, against USD 0.8 billion in the second quarter and net outflows of USD 2.3 billion a year earlier. The institutional channel took in USD 15.7 billion, including the onboarding of about USD 12 billion of commercial mortgage loans from Equitable. Alternatives and multi-asset strategies attracted USD 15 billion, the seventh consecutive quarter of organic growth in the category.

Private markets assets under management reached USD 105 billion, which passes the upper end of the firm's 2027 target range of USD 90 billion to USD 100 billion. The pipeline of awarded but unfunded institutional mandates fell to USD 13.1 billion from USD 25.8 billion in June as deployments accelerated. Chief Executive Seth Bernstein noted that the pipeline excludes a prospective USD 100 billion mandate from Corebridge.

Retail and Equity Outflows Offset Part of the Gain

Retail recorded net outflows of USD 8.4 billion, against inflows of USD 0.9 billion in the second quarter, as active equity redemptions and rate-sensitive selling in taxable fixed income outweighed gains in alternatives and tax-exempt bonds. Private Wealth outflows were USD 0.7 billion. Active equity outflows were roughly USD 13 billion, while passive strategies took in USD 2.5 billion.

Tax-exempt strategies drew USD 1.6 billion, the 15th straight quarter of positive flows, and taxable fixed income added USD 0.3 billion. A senior executive said retail and Asian investors are waiting for interest rates to stabilize, and that a full return to taxable fixed income takes several quarters.

Earnings and Guidance

On a GAAP basis, net revenues rose 7.8% to USD 1.226 billion, but operating expenses rose 14% to USD 976 million on higher incentive compensation and general and administrative costs. Operating income fell 12% to USD 249.5 million and the margin narrowed to 21.9% from 24.3%. Earnings per unit were USD 0.79, unchanged from a year earlier.

Adjusted net revenues rose 2.2% to USD 904.3 million, while adjusted operating income was flat at USD 302.7 million. The adjusted margin eased 70 basis points to 33.5%. Management raised 2026 performance fee guidance to USD 135 million to USD 150 million from USD 115 million to USD 135 million, and narrowed non-compensation expense guidance to USD 620 million to USD 635 million.

The firm repurchased or retained 1.1 million units for USD 38.4 million. The president is to succeed Bernstein as chief executive on April 1, 2027, under a transition announced in September.

Flow Markers to Follow

Several measures frame the next quarters: funding of the Corebridge mandate, institutional pipeline assets against USD 13.1 billion, retail net flows against the USD 8.4 billion outflow, and the adjusted operating margin relative to 33.5%.

Further items include performance fees against the raised guidance range, the compensation ratio of 48.5% that management projects through the fourth quarter, and the chief executive handover date.
