Volume and Unit Value Both Contribute
Armstrong World Industries (NYSE:AWI) reported in its quarterly filing on Tuesday third-quarter net sales of USD 475.8 million, up from USD 425.2 million. Higher volumes added USD 35 million and favorable average unit value added USD 16 million. Architectural Specialties net sales rose USD 33 million, made up of a USD 25 million organic increase and a USD 8 million contribution from acquisitions, and Mineral Fiber net sales rose USD 18 million.
Operating income rose to USD 131.2 million from USD 117.2 million, helped by equity earnings from unconsolidated affiliates of USD 31.7 million against USD 28.0 million. Net earnings were USD 91.9 million, or USD 2.17 per diluted share, against USD 86.3 million and USD 1.98. The effective tax charge was USD 32.5 million against USD 23.2 million.
The company said tariffs and the conflict in Iran had no material direct effect on results in the first nine months, though the broader economic effects have made the operating environment more challenging than a year earlier.
Input Costs Press on Gross Margin
Cost of goods sold was USD 285.1 million, or 59.9% of net sales, against 58.0% a year earlier. The company cited input cost inflation, mainly freight and raw materials, higher tariffs on certain goods sold and the effect of acquisitions, partly offset by favorable unit value and manufacturing productivity. Higher freight and raw material costs reduced third-quarter operating income by about USD 6 million.
Pricing actions continue. Mineral Fiber ceiling prices rose in the first and third quarters, certain Architectural Specialties prices rose in the first and second quarters, and the WAVE joint venture raised grid prices in the first three quarters. Further increases on Mineral Fiber, Architectural Specialties and grid products were announced in October for the fourth quarter.
Acquisitions continue to feed the specialty segment: Eventscape in February 2026, Parallel in December 2025 and Geometrik in September 2025. Employee count rose to about 4,100 from 3,800 at year-end.

Nine-month net sales rose 10.2% to USD 1,357.7 million, on USD 82 million of volume and USD 43 million of unit value, while operating income rose 6.0% to USD 359.2 million. Net earnings were USD 255.4 million, or USD 5.98 per diluted share, against USD 243.2 million and USD 5.56. Higher freight, raw material and energy costs reduced nine-month operating income by about USD 12 million.
Interest expense fell to USD 7.5 million in the quarter from USD 8.2 million. The diluted share count was 42.3 million against 43.6 million a year earlier. Cash and equivalents were USD 71.4 million at Sept. 30, compared with USD 112.7 million at year-end.
