Robinhood shares slipped after the trading platform's third-quarter earnings per share fell short of forecasts, with a sharp year-over-year drop in crypto revenue overshadowing record revenue and trading volume.
Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:HOOD) slipped on Wednesday, October 28, as investors weighed an earnings miss and a steep decline in crypto-related revenue against record results elsewhere in the business.
Record Revenue, Still a Miss
The online brokerage reported third-quarter earnings per share of $0.51, short of analysts' expectations. Crypto revenue fell sharply from a year earlier, a notable reversal for a segment that had powered much of the company's growth during previous digital-asset rallies.
The miss came despite record revenue and record trading volume, according to market reports, and investors appeared more focused on profitability and the crypto slowdown than on headline growth.
Crypto Cools, AI Risk Flagged
Robinhood has become one of the most closely watched retail-trading barometers, and its crypto business is especially sensitive to swings in digital-asset prices and trading enthusiasm. The sharp drop in crypto revenue suggests retail activity in tokens cooled meaningfully compared with a year ago. Bitcoin traded around $81,300 on Wednesday, slightly higher on the day, while ether hovered near $2,363.
The company's quarterly filing also included a warning that AI trading agents could make unintended trades, according to market reports, a risk disclosure that reflects how brokers are grappling with the rise of automated tools used by customers.
A Modest Recovery
The stock was hit harder before the opening bell, sharply lower in premarket trading, but pared much of that decline during the regular session, finishing modestly down on the S&P 500.
That recovery suggests some investors viewed the record revenue and volume figures as evidence that the core platform remains healthy, even if the quarter's bottom line disappointed.
What to Watch
The S&P 500 gained 21.38 points to close at 7,743.98, its third straight gain, with financials among the eight sectors that advanced, though regional banks edged lower as long-dated Treasury yields climbed.
Crypto remains the swing factor for Robinhood. Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) reports Thursday, offering another read on the crypto-equity space, and Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) reports after the close the same day.
