Lennox International (NYSE:LII) shares fell steeply on Wednesday, closing at $332.64, down 10.59%, after the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning maker reported third-quarter results that showed shrinking profitability and lowered its full-year earnings guidance. The drop made Lennox one of the weakest large industrial names on a day when the broader market edged up to a record.
Company Context
The company reported its results on October 28. Revenue for the quarter rose 10% to $1,572.5 million, helped by acquisitions and strong demand in its commercial business. Profitability, however, moved the other way. Total segment profit declined 2% to $323.3 million, and the segment margin narrowed by 240 basis points to 20.6%. GAAP operating income fell 5% to $312.1 million. GAAP diluted earnings per share were $6.41, compared with $7.38 a year earlier, and adjusted diluted earnings per share dropped 7% to $6.84.
Session Backdrop
The key disappointment for investors was the guidance. Lennox cut its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings per share forecast to a range of $21.00 to $21.50, down from its previous range of $23.00 to $24.00. The company now expects full-year revenue growth of about 6%, with roughly 5 percentage points of that coming from completed acquisitions, and it set a free cash flow target of $700 million to $750 million. Chief executive Alok Maskara acknowledged that the company's margins and results fell short of its expectations, citing competitive pressure and persistent inflation.
The weakness was concentrated in the residential side of the business. The Home Comfort Solutions segment, which serves homeowners through heating and cooling equipment, grew revenue 3% to $937.2 million, but segment profit fell 18% to $175.7 million and its margin contracted by 490 basis points to 18.7%. Lennox said costs were pressured by $45 million of product cost inflation, including tariffs, and $15 million of higher fuel costs. Management said it is working to pass cost increases through to customers and to improve productivity, and it described residential end markets as stabilizing.
The commercial side offered a brighter picture. Building Climate Solutions revenue jumped 24% to $635.3 million, with organic growth of 15%, and segment profit rose 19% to $166.5 million, although its margin also slipped 110 basis points to 26.2%. That strength was not enough to offset the deterioration in residential profitability and the reduced earnings outlook.
Lennox is a major North American supplier of HVAC and refrigeration equipment for residential and commercial customers, and its shares have historically been valued for consistent margin performance. A cut of this size to annual earnings guidance therefore marks a meaningful reset in expectations.
The session backdrop added to the pressure on cost-sensitive manufacturers. Oil prices remained far above pre-war levels, consistent with the fuel cost headwind the company flagged. The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.75% to 4.00% while noting that inflation remains elevated, and two officials dissented in favour of a hike. With the 10-year Treasury yield near 5%, housing-related spending remains under pressure from high borrowing costs. Other building products names were also weak, with Zurn Elkay Water Solutions falling after its own cautious outlook, even as the S&P 500 rose 0.3% to a record close on gains concentrated in AI infrastructure stocks.
What This Move Means for Lennox International
From here, investors are likely to watch whether Lennox can recover margins through pricing actions and productivity measures, whether the stabilization in residential markets develops into a recovery, and whether commercial momentum continues. Developments on tariffs and input costs, as well as the company's next guidance update, will be important in judging whether the reduced outlook proves conservative or needs further revision.
