Vertiv Holdings (NYSE:VRT) slid hard on Thursday, October 22, 2026, as fears over hyperscaler spending swept through the suppliers that build and equip AI data centers. The stock changed hands around $194.64 to $196.42 in the session, according to market reports. Reports differed on the exact size of the move, but all showed a steep fall for the S&P 500 member.

Vertiv sells power management, cooling and thermal systems that keep servers running. That ties its fortunes closely to how much the largest cloud and AI companies, known as hyperscalers, spend on new facilities. Vertiv issued no news of its own on Thursday.

Meta lit the fuse

The selloff started with the third-quarter report from Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) on Wednesday evening. Revenue hit a record $64.60 billion, but Meta narrowed its 2026 capital spending range to $135 billion to $145 billion, raising the low end. Free cash flow turned negative at $2.12 billion, which marked the company's first cash outflow in more than a decade.

Meta's future commitments rose to about $825 billion from about $700 billion in July, according to market data, and the cost of insuring Meta's debt hit a record. Meta's chief financial officer said, "We don't have any specific financing plans to announce at this time."

For data-center suppliers, the question is no longer only about demand. It is about whether the companies placing the orders can keep funding them.

More pressure from Nvidia and IBM

Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA)'s chief executive said, "The demand of the capital is much greater than the availability of the capital." IBM (NYSE:IBM)'s chief executive added to the caution. "They are also getting worried if some of the AI spending is completely out of control with no real return," he said.

Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX)'s guidance, which cited supply-chain constraints, pushed chip stocks lower, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index had its biggest one-day drop since June 23.

Vertiv's peers in the AI power chain also fell. GE Vernova (NYSE:GEV) plunged, Eaton (NYSE:ETN) slid and Quanta Services (NYSE:PWR) sank. Market commentary grouped Vertiv with GE Vernova and Eaton as Meta's outlook stoked AI financing worries.

The bigger picture

The S&P 500 fell 93.74 points to 7,663.43, its worst day since July. The Nasdaq Composite lost 694.00 points to 26,008.86, its steepest drop since June 5. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 11.89 points to 52,867.98, and the Russell 2000 rose 3.01 points.

Breadth was better than the headline numbers suggest. About two of every three S&P 500 stocks rose, according to market reports, as money rotated into staples, health care, utilities, homebuilders and railroads. The 10-year Treasury yield fell back below a closely watched threshold for the first time since September 22.

Vertiv's Customers Report Next

Hyperscaler earnings come next. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) report on October 28, and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) reports on October 29. Investors in Vertiv will look for any change in data-center capital spending plans from those companies.

The Federal Reserve announces its policy decision on October 28. Lower Treasury yields supported many parts of the market on Thursday, but not AI hardware.

Positioning is another factor. Goldman Sachs data showed hedge funds selling short at about five times the pace they were buying. Whether Thursday's selling marks a turning point or a pause is still unclear.
