Shares of Maplebear (NASDAQ:CART), the company behind the Instacart grocery-delivery service, edged lower on Friday, October 30, 2026. The stock slipped after analyst downgrades that followed its third-quarter report, according to market data, which did not name the firms involved.
The downgrades came even though the quarter itself was solid on the top line. Instacart beat third-quarter sales expectations, market reports said on Oct. 29. The details of the analysts' reasoning were not available, and no other company announcements tied to Friday's trading were found.
Holding up better than tech
By the standards of the day, Maplebear's decline was mild. The Nasdaq Composite fell 747.73 points to 25,437.00, its worst session since June, as a selloff in chip, AI and megacap technology stocks swept the market. Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s weak fourth-quarter outlook and cash-burn warning set off a global chip rout, and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s results, which showed negative trailing free Cash Flow and higher planned spending, deepened worries about the cost of artificial intelligence.
The S&P 500 lost 140.32 points to 7,580.07, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 572.25 points to 51,770.31 and the Russell 2000 fell 47.37 points to 2,811.84. The equal-weight version of the S&P 500 fell far less than the cap-weighted benchmark, a sign that the damage was concentrated in the largest technology and chip stocks.
Maplebear, which operates a consumer-facing delivery platform rather than AI hardware or cloud infrastructure, sat outside the eye of that storm. Consumer staples were among the day's best-performing sectors, and consumer discretionary stocks fell only modestly compared with technology.
Internet peers had a harder day
Other consumer internet names fared much worse. Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) plunged after warning that daily users could fall as Google's AI search features cut referrals, and Pinterest (NYSE:PINS) extended losses after missing estimates. Roblox (NYSE:RBLX) tumbled after reporting a drop in daily active users and a disappointing holiday bookings outlook.
Amazon, a major player in online retail, also fell on Friday after its quarterly Earnings Per Share of $1.89 trailed estimates and its Revenue of $201.9 billion came in just below expectations.
Rates and the macro picture
The macro backdrop added to the caution. The Federal Reserve left its benchmark rate range unchanged at its Oct. 27-28 meeting, but two officials dissented in favor of a hike, and Fed speakers on Friday leaned hawkish. St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem said: "I judge that additional firming of Monetary Policy will be necessary, and soon." CME FedWatch data showed traders treating a December hike as likely.
Oil prices also matter for delivery businesses. West Texas Intermediate crude rose $2.12 to $104.12 a barrel on tensions around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
An Investment strategist captured the tone of the earnings season, saying: "The earnings bar is very high."
What to watch
Investors will look for more detail on the analysts' downgrades and whether other firms revise their views on Maplebear after the third-quarter report. Any commentary from the company on consumer Demand and delivery costs, particularly with oil above $100, will also be closely followed.
On the broader calendar, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) reports on Monday, Nov. 2, the midterm elections take place Tuesday, Nov. 3, and the October jobs report arrives Friday, Nov. 6. Those events will shape expectations for the Fed's December decision and for consumer spending heading into the holiday season.
