Key Highlights
- The S&P 500 rose 0.73%, or 56.27 points, to 7,722.72 on Friday, October 2, and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) followed as soft jobs data lifted sentiment.
- The Dow added 0.49% to 51,176.96 and the Nasdaq Composite jumped 1.19% to 27,190.86, a technology-led move that favored the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ).
- September payrolls rose by only 29,000 against expectations of 84,000, while Unemployment ticked up to 4.2% from 4.1%.
- Futures slipped modestly premarket on Monday, October 5, with the 10-year Treasury Yield near 5.25% and FOMC minutes due Wednesday, October 7.
A weak print that cooled hike fears
The jobs report undershot forecasts by a wide margin, yet investors treated it as good news because it eased pressure on the Federal Reserve. The Fed raised rates by 25 basis points in September to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%, and CME FedWatch data showed the chance of another hike in October falling to roughly 18% to 20%. One regional bank economist noted that the broader underemployment rate edged lower, which tempered Recession worries. Buyers of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) were effectively betting that a softer labor market means a less aggressive Fed.
Technology carries the load
Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) touched an intraday record near USD 237.88 and a Market Value above USD 5.7 trillion, helping the Nasdaq outpace its peers. The Dow, which has fewer technology weights, rose less than half as fast. Small caps also participated: the Russell 2000 was reported up about 0.94% at 2,832.89, and the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSEARCA:IWM) offers one way investors track that group. Even so, the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:DIA) and broader benchmarks trailed the Nasdaq, underlining how concentrated Leadership remains in AI-linked mega caps.
What Monday could change
Dow futures were down about 0.15%, S&P 500 futures about 0.17%, Nasdaq-100 futures about 0.24% and Russell 2000 futures about 0.11% in early trading. Iran said the Strait of Hormuz will not fully reopen until seven conditions are met, keeping Brent Crude above USD 100 a barrel. The ISM services index arrives at 10:00 a.m. ET, and the September FOMC minutes follow on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. ET. Bond yields could matter as much as data, since Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) and peers carry high growth valuations.
Where Things Stand
The rally is real but narrower than the headline suggests: the 29,000-job miss helped because it lowered rate-hike odds, and technology supplied most of the lift. Whether broader participation follows depends on yields and the Fed. The Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) outran the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY), which outran the Dow. Monday's ISM reading and Wednesday's minutes are the next tests.
