Key Highlights

  • The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) tracks a sector facing proposed 25% Section 232 tariffs, which five tech trade groups say would act as a 15.6% construction tax on US data centers, costing about USD 90 billion over four years.
  • The iShares MSCI Japan ETF (NYSEARCA:EWJ) offers exposure to a market where the Nikkei 225 closed at 69,947 on October 5, up 1,637 points, after briefly topping 70,000 as weak US payrolls cut Fed hike expectations.
  • The iShares China Large-Cap ETF (NYSEARCA:FXI) tracks large Chinese companies after the Hang Seng fell 640.98 points, or 2.6%, to 23,972.29 on October 2, its steepest drop in over six months, as the 10-year Treasury Yield touched about 5.34%.
  • The Invesco CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSEARCA:FXE) tracks a euro that fell to about 1.12 as the French-German 10-year spread widened to roughly 141 basis points, a 14-year high.

iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX): Tariffs on the Core Input

The Computer and Communications Industry Association and four other trade groups wrote to President Trump on October 2 opposing 25% Section 232 tariffs on semiconductors, robots and industrial machinery. Their research estimates a 25% chip Tariff would act as a 15.6% construction tax on US data centers, with a four-year cost near USD 90 billion, or USD 22.5 billion a year by simple division. Representative Jonathan McHale called the duties counterproductive for competitiveness and AI leadership. ISM Manufacturing price pressures are near their highest since March, so tariffs would stack on rising costs. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) is the most direct instrument, and the proposal is not yet enacted. Chips and servers are the largest equipment items in an AI facility, roughly one dollar in every six and a half of build cost under the 15.6% estimate, so budgets would be hit first at cloud and AI companies. The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSEARCA:XLI) would also feel machinery duties. Investors should watch for published rates, exemptions and phase-ins, and for any revision to Capital spending guidance at hyperscalers.

iShares MSCI Japan ETF (NYSEARCA:EWJ): A Chip-Led Rebound

The Nikkei closed at 69,947, up 1,637 points or about 2.4%, while TOPIX gained 54.22 points, or 1.3%, to 4,145.22, which shows the rally concentrated in a few price-heavy chip and technology names. Tokyo Electron, Advantest, SoftBank Group, TDK and Kioxia led gains as the weak US Payroll report reduced expectations of an October Fed hike and falling oil eased Inflation worries. The dollar traded near 158 yen after the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1.25% in September, a 31-year high. Takaichi's policy speech, wage data and Fast Retailing Earnings on October 8 are next. The iShares MSCI Japan ETF (NYSEARCA:EWJ) is priced in dollars, so yen moves matter. The gap between the Nikkei's 2.4% and TOPIX's 1.3% gain is a warning about breadth, and the prior close implied by the move was 68,310. A level near 70,000 now acts as resistance after the first test in about three months. The Federal Reserve meets on October 27 to 28, and a Reversal in US yields or a sharp yen move would test the rally.

iShares China Large-Cap ETF (NYSEARCA:FXI): A Holiday Gap Lower

The Hang Seng's 2.6% drop followed the National Day break, when Stock Connect southbound flows were suspended and mainland buyers were absent. The Hang Seng Tech index lost 2.26% to 4,157.94 and the China Enterprises Index fell 2.31% to 8,030.54. HSBC slid about 5.7%, and Tencent, Alibaba and Baidu each lost more than 2%. Macau gaming Revenue fell 1.2% from a year earlier. Mainland markets reopen October 8, which may restore demand. Higher US yields remain the main headwind for China-linked equities. The iShares China Large-Cap ETF (NYSEARCA:FXI) would reflect any rebound and any further yield pressure. The prior close implied by the 640.98-point loss was 24,613.27, simple arithmetic. HSBC's 5.7% fall matters because the bank is a heavy index weight whose earnings depend on interest margins. A recovery depends on the October 8 reopening and on whether US yields ease after the weak payroll report, which lowered rate-hike odds but did not stop the 10-year touching 5.34%. The iShares China Large-Cap ETF (NYSEARCA:FXI) holds many of the stocks that fell, including banks and internet names. Macau's 1.2% revenue decline adds a consumer-demand concern for casino and tourism groups, and the Hang Seng Tech Index's 4,157.94 close shows how much technology names carry the index.

Invesco CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSEARCA:FXE): Fiscal Stress in Europe

The French-German spread of about 141 basis points, with French 10-year yields near 4.92%, implies a Bund near 3.51%, simple arithmetic. France's 2027 budget faced scrutiny in the National Assembly, Spain is preparing early elections and Euro Stoxx Banks fell 3.9% in the prior session. EUR/USD dropped to about 1.12, the lowest since May 2025, while Brent held above USD 101. European Central Bank minutes are due this week and Fed minutes arrive on Wednesday. A firm dollar and fiscal worries tighten conditions globally. The Invesco CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSEARCA:FXE) is the US-listed read on the currency. Banks hold large amounts of government debt, so wider spreads cut asset values and raise funding costs, which explains the Equity reaction. Political compromise on the budget could narrow the gap quickly, but a new peak above 141 basis points would signal more stress. The Invesco CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSEARCA:FXE) would lose value in dollar terms if the euro slides further.

Where Things Stand

The most important signal is the US yield, which touched about 5.34% and links all four stories: it pressured Hong Kong, strengthened the dollar against the euro and raises the cost of any tariff-driven data-center build, while a weak payroll report helped Japan. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) carries the policy risk. The iShares MSCI Japan ETF (NYSEARCA:EWJ) carries the relief. The balance of evidence is mixed. The next catalysts are the Fed meeting on October 27 to 28 and central bank minutes.
